guts frisby
“Guts is the original extreme disc sport featuring lightning-fast throws and incredible one-handed catches. Invented in Michigan nearly 50 years ago, this exciting, high speed game has spread all over the world, from Japan to Great Britain and from Finland to Taiwan. The 50th IFT will host the best five-man teams from across America as they battle through three days of intense Guts competition. And if you’re interested in learning the sport, the hottest players in the country can show you how to throw the disc hard and play tough, scrambling Guts defense. Registration is open to both novice and professional players.”

Next summer’s 50th International Frisbee Tournament, being held in Houghton, Michigan is the place to be….. It has traditionally been the largest Guts tournament of the year, and during it’s “Hey Day” the IFT boasted as many as 400-500 competitors. Our goal is to make the 2007 IFT an extraordinary event, a mixture of novice and professional, that will expose Guts to new competitors….

About Guts
Guts is a sport played between two teams of one to five players each. The objective is to be the first team to score 21 points. To start play, each team lines up facing each other 14 m apart. Play is accomplished by a player attempting to throw the disc toward or at the opposing team and within the reach of at least 1 player of that team, in such a manner that the opposing team cannot make a clean catch. Scoring is contingent on the success or failure of the throwing team. A good throw, without a catch, results in a point for the throwing team and a bad throw results in a point for the receiving team.

Guts is pure adrenaline! Skilled players can throw hard and accurately and must be able to catch with either hand. Most catches are not made on initial contact but on deflection and when five guys are flying around trying to make a clean, one-handed catch, it’s terrifically exciting. A must see! One of the greatest specatator sports ever! And a heck of a lot of fun to play! The US Nationals will be held on September 2-3, 2006 in Northville, Michigan and will be a good chance to see what Guts is all about and if you think it’s a game you might like to try. Play Guts – Have fun!

    Got GUTS?

Ditto what Steve said! One thing that makes playing Guts such a rush is you don’t know until the last second whether that speeding plastic will hit one of your teammates … or YOU! You’ve gotta have super fast reflexes to make a catch … or at least to keep the sunglasses on your face! And not only do you need a fast shot back, but also accuracy. With that you can choose to hit the guy on the opposing team you know can’t catch you. It’s awesome fun!! And ladies … Guts is not just for the guys. I want to know too … have YOU got the Guts?? ;-)

I just saw a great video of Guts action at the 2004 World Ultimate and Guts Championships in Turku, Finland. (http://www.usgpa.net/video/GutsWugc04.wmv) That can give you a good idea of what the game is like. The Japanese won, by the way, beating Tiawan in the finals. MOst people see the scary-fast speed of the throws and the incredible concentration and lightning fast reactions of a straight-on catch — sometimes breaking the disc in the process — and they just can’t believe their eyes! This sport is crazy. It’s like a martial arts movie where the only weapon is 109 grams of bright red plastic. And that’s why they call it GUTS!

Hey, I’m a direct decendant of Tim Healy, co-inventor of GUTS frisbee. He was my grandpa. I’m 14 years old right now and have played some GUTS and I love it. Me and my cousins (also decendants of Tim) are going to enter in the IFT in 2 years. It should be a blast. I’m proud of my grandpa and I’m glad to see that this game has grown to what it has. Any questions or anything just e-mail me at Houlie92@charter.net.

    Got GUTS?!

Calling all ladies and gents with Guts …

Registration is now open for the WFDF World Ultimate and Guts Championships. Next summer, August 2-9, 2008, nearly 2000 athletes from over 25 nations will gather in Vancouver, Canada for this awesome frisbee disc event! At this link you can get all the information, register a team or sign up to volunteer. Get involved … and get this on your calendar so you don’t miss it!!

Oh … I forgot to make a special invitation for you women out there who are into extreme sports. If you never played the ORIGINAL extreme sport, Guts Frisbee, the WUGC tourney in Vancouver will be the perfect venue in which to do so. Japan has more than 20 women’s Guts teams. Many experienced players will be at this tournament and have offered their expertise in coaching new women’s teams in the first ever division of women’s Guts at a WUGC tournament!! If you have any Guts at all … plan to be there!!
